How to protect and improve the look of damaged hair

If your hair feels dull, rough and shows signs of damage, it is most likely because it is in need of urgent and adapted care.

Dry and brittle hair is a common problem, and the reasons can be truly diverse. Whether due to an excessive use of hair dryers or stylers, prolonged exposure to the sun and sea (or pool) water, procedures such as colouring or even the lack of the right care, hair health can often deteriorate.

But there is always light at the end of the tunnel – there are ways to maintain the vitality and health of your hair, as well as to protect against future damage.

In this article, learn about the most common causes and how you can maintain hair strength and nutrition.

What is brittle hair?

What really happens to damaged hair?

- The protective barrier function of the hair is compromised, leaving it more vulnerable to external aggressions;

- Hair scales are removed, thus exposing the core, and causing the release of naturally present water, leading to dryness and dehydration;

- The keratin present in the hair core is destroyed by elements such as heat, the use of chemical procedures, or lack of care, making it drier and more brittle.

When your hair is in this state, it becomes more difficult to control and even grow in good condition. It may also be more prone to splitting at the ends, frizz in the case of curly hair, and even taking on a “strawy” appearance.

How to solve this?

1. Identify the cause

To begin with, it is important to identify the reason why your hair needs some regenerating care. Hair that has undergone more aggressive treatments may become more easily weakened and in need of a break and more specialized care.

Reducing contact with products used in colouring or straightening and the daily use of heat styling tools are some of the things you can do to protect your hair strands.

2. Follow a proper routine and trim damaged ends

Following a complete and personalized hair care routine for each hair type and condition is the basis. This will allow your hair to make the most of each treatment and the products to penetrate correctly. Paying some attention to the way you dry your hair is extremely important, drying it naturally or with cold air being the most recommended. However, if you can’t always do this, the use of thermal protectors that shield hair strands from heat sources is also important to regain some vitality and prevent further damage.

If the ends of your hair are damaged and very dry, it may be a good idea to trim them. Shortening your hair a few centimetres removes the damaged part and makes it easier to untangle, leaving it with a healthier look.

3. Pay extra attention in summer

Summer is always synonymous with holidays, the beach (or pool) and lots of sun. However, with the sun can come damage caused by UV rays, and with holidays, beaches and swimming pools, comes sand, wind, salt and chlorine, factors that disturb the hair shaft and make our hair more fragile and porous. At this point, it is important not to forget adapted protective care – preferably leave-on products - and go for a specific post-sun exposure range, which repairs and nourishes the hair.

Avoiding tying your hair while it is wet or damp, and using accessories that protect it from direct contact with the sun also help prevent further damage.

We know that dry and brittle hair can be a frustrating problem, but with the right care, it is possible to restore the health and beauty of your hair.

By adopting an appropriate hair care routine and using nourishing and moisturizing products, your hair strands will remain strong and healthy, which ultimately not only improves their appearance, but also protects them from further problems in the future. Consult your pharmacist for advice on a suitable restoration routine.
