HAIR LOSS: DIFFERENT TYPES AND MAIN CAUSES

Learn about the different types and causes of hair loss and identify your problem. Discover our advice.

During the hair’s life cycle, its shedding is influenced by certain factors and can be more pronounced at certain times of the year. But do you know how to distinguish occasional shedding from that influenced by other factors?

In this article, learn how to distinguish the different types of loss caused by environmental stimuli and what to do about it.

PROGRESSIVE OR OCCASIONAL HAIR LOSS?

There are several causes for hair loss, but it is essential to know how to distinguish a shedding that is considered natural and part of the hair cycle from one that may require your attention and some care.

If you find more strands of hair than normal on your brush or during washing, but the hair density remains the same, this may be normal. Hair renews itself during its life cycle and may be at the end of a cycle.

Is there a specific time for occasional shedding?

Changes in the hair growth cycle can be caused by a short-duration stimulus that may coincide with certain times of the year. Therefore, you may notice increased shedding in autumn. However, there are patterns that can also coincide with your routines, namely, times of greater stress. In women, shedding can increase during pregnancy, postpartum and breastfeeding.

Progressive loss is associated with a persistent environmental stimulus, often related to hormonal causes, genetics, or chronic stress.

Due to advancing age, hair loss is a natural condition in which hair strands gradually become thinner and less numerous.

It is important to identify the cause to act in the best possible way and strengthen hair growth.

If your type of shedding falls outside these patterns, and you feel that you are losing hair density, seek advice.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT IT?

Start by choosing a shampoo suitable for fall-prone hair. Learn what kind of care your hair and scalp need and choose the right products for them. Avoid very hot water so as not to dehydrate the hair strands and make them more fragile. Use warm water and finish with cold water to close the hair’s cuticle.

Untangle your hair gently and opt for a conditioning cream, using a wide-tooth comb. Comb your hair slowly from tip to root. This way, you comb gradually and avoid both further damage and possible breakage.

Use the dryer at a low temperature and keep at least a 15 cm distance from the scalp. Avoid harming your hair with heat tools, and if you can't avoid them use a thermal hair protector.

Follow a diet rich in essential vitamins. Include salmon, dark leafy vegetables, beans and lentils, and nuts in your menu.
